I just finished it last night. I think I'll go back to shining in the darkness again. I found an anti-grinding patch online.

Can't believe I'm only coming across this video now. Played both for the first time via the PS 4 collection, finished both within a few days. Have to say, always go back to Bloodlines. Haven't touched SC4 since I finished. So I agree with this video hands down very well done and on point.

The Genesis DIN8 is 262° (U-shaped) while the one added to your PC Engine is Neo Geo style, 270° DIN8 (C-shaped). You can force the cable in but it doesn’t really fit right.

I use one of those adapters as the audio input for my DVI OSSC. Mine is the old version where there originally was no audio but I added Borti’s upgrade board and switched to the A version of the firmware around 2017. Borti’s board is wired to the SCART audio pins. When Inuse HD Retrovision cables I plug them into AV2 and plug the audio into that adapter. They all line up perfectly.

I don't totally agree that Bloodlones is better. I think SCIV is one of those "greater than the sum of its parts" deals where Bloodlines is exacly the sum of its parts.

my major issue with 2 and 9 is the INCREDIBLE difficulty. 2 is a classic game, so i understand it's reasoning... 9 however is oof. yes, retro revival, but out of the 8 robot masters half of them have mini bosses that are... Hornet man's mini boss is BS, and Jewel mans Mini boss... uuuuhhhhggg that thing is pain due to the Gutsman stun it gives you.

There is quite a lot of Macross and Neon Genesis Evangelion in ZeroRanger and I do love it.

Love seeing someone so passionate about Darius. These are great games.

I feel like G-Darius suffers from issues with difficulty as well. A lot of the later levels just feel cheap and designed solely to overwhelm the player rather than give them a proper challenge.

My Genesis output looks like someone rubbed my TV with grass (It's green as hell.) Certain things have a blurry rainbow afterimage. I use AV cables, do you know how to fix this?

The Mega Drve port is a bit easier, it's a good port and a good "practise" play as its quite faithful to the arcade.

Gaiden is on the arcade compilation, therefore arcade compilation (on sale).

CV IV is overrated. Time mecahnic is ass in every Adventure game.

I know this video is years old, but your argument about swinging in Castlevania 4 is just straight up invalid. If you actually knew what you can do and how much you can do with them especially on certain levels you would admit to being wrong there. Like try and look at a speedrun and you'll see exactly what I am talking about.

This game made me love shmups, it was afaik the first Darius game we had in France.

i also like Adventure but you can't deny that the game is *broken*. look at all the screen tearing (in a Game Boy game?!) and constant slowdown. you can actually *feel* the game constantly slowing down and speeding up as you play. it makes it hard to get into a rhythm, and more importantly, harder to time accurate jumps in a game that demands pixel-perfect jumps. there's no denying that the programmers seriously dropped the ball with this game. that, plus the whip downgrades, PLUS the absurd difficulty spike in the last level, makes the game borderline aggravating to play. *however*, i agree that it has decent level design, great music, and good graphics, especially for a first-gen Game Boy game. so i can't honestly say Adventure is a *good* game, but i still like it. (especially since i stop after level 3!)

Alright...it's been years, and my backlog of games is absolutely out, of course. I have not played Shining Force CD since it was released on the Sega CD in 1995. I haven't had the chance to play the second one in many years as well. Now, I have a Sega Genesis Mini 2 that includes both games, and I'm wondering which one gets played first? I'm pretty sure the order is Shining Force, Shining Force Gaiden, Shining Force (second Game Gear game), and Shining Force CD's 3rd scenario. If I'm right, that's kind of a convoluted mess. Addendum- Why now, you may ask? Especially as the Genesis Mini 2 came out like 2 years ago. I am a 5th generation collector that has finally gotten my hands on the entire Shining Force 3 set fully translated. Now, I must play them all back-to-back, and I have already finished the first one. So...need input. ;)

AVGN always brings up the whipping when comparing Castlevania games and says that's why nothing beats 4. I love 4, but personally think Bloodlines is better (had Genesis way before Snes, so played 4 later).

I traded a neighbor kid for an old Gameboy back in the day with 3 games: Zelda: Link's Awakening, Ninja Gaiden Shadow, and Castlevania the Adventure. I spent a whole summer playing on that thing and always had a soft spot for Adventure. Honestly, I've always liked it and always will. Great review, subscribed and playlist saved.

I reviewed it on my LJ's Oddities channel. And first hand experience says theres WAY better out there. Specifically the sequel. My biggest gripe isnt jus the speed. Theres no denying the level design and downgrading whip enemies ruin the experience rather than add "challenge". Theres hard, and then there's bullshit hard. No wonder they keep throwing invincibility crosses at you. Mercifully each stage has over ten minutes for a time limit which is beyond generous. And if I can say anything nice at all is that the first level music is THE BEST.

Really neat video. Never knew about the Zone G boss being different per ship! Feels like more effort went into the soundtrack than went into many full games on the system, bloody excellent.

Large sprites in the 16bit era is the equivalent of Ray Tracing on modern consoles. It looks great but kills performance or inhibits gameplay.

Adventure is esoteric. Sometimes I'm in the mood to spend a half hour going through it, but it's needlessly strict for 90% of people. It's quite literally a game where _you_ are here to impress _it_ and not the other way around. There's a romhack for this out there that "fixes" it by reverse breaking the game; in addition to no more whip downgrades and re-skinning all the items to more familiar CV fare, your jumps go so far horizontally that the platforming is trivialized completely. You end up overshooting your jumps almost. _Absurd._

I really can't say I agree. I had way more fun with Legends, which isn't a particularly great CV game either. lol I guess I appreciate that The Adventure layed the foundation for Belmont's Revenge.

Having played both games, bloodlines on genesis and Castlevania four on my cousin’s SNES I like both games and it’s very hard to say which one is the best since both have their own unique qualities. If I had to choose, it would have to be bloodlines because of the look and feel of the characters and game as a whole. Plus, considering fact that, that’s the only Castlevania game to be released on the genesis. I wish there would’ve been more games like it.

It’s bit depressing you and me are some of the few to actually remember and play Darius. I mainly play CS but I always boot up G and sometimes pop in Taito Legends 2 for Gaiden.

And we never hear about Rondo…

Bloodlines might look better and it does, but the gameplay isn’t as good. Sorry, my opinion is that 4 still remains king of the 16 bit era.

Wish I could your commentary but it’s super low. Also you prefer Twin to Force I take it? I don’t own either but I love Force gameplay, bosses and especially music. I love Hyper Great Thing for his level and Boss 7 remix mainly.

I am a Sega fan through and through in my opinion this game does not hold a candle to Super Castlevania 4 I think it was just oh yeah we finally got Castlevania

Glad you went back and changed your opinion. Even as a kid i knew when playing this it was easily one of the best technical impressive games on the SMS

This might be the only second Castlevania game on its system that was the best on its system and one of the few, possibly even the only one, that wasn't the worst.
